Exploring Laos & Cambodia: A Luxury Indochina Journey

Laos and Cambodia may not always be the first destinations that come to mind when planning a journey through Southeast Asia, but together they offer a fantastic blend of ancient history, beautiful landscapes, welcoming people and exceptional cuisine. Having previously explored Vietnam, our travel specialist Roop Kumar wanted to complete his experience of Indochina and discover what makes these neighbouring countries so special.

From the peaceful riverside charm of Luang Prabang to the vibrant streets of Siem Reap and the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor, this journey confirmed to Roop that Laos and Cambodia deserve a place on every traveller's wish list. We asked him some questions to find out what made his trip so special.

What was the aim of the trip?

After experiencing the magic and hospitality of Vietnam, I wanted to complete my experience of Indochina so I can advise our future clients first-hand of how amazing these countries are as well.

Laos and Cambodia did not disappoint me at all. The genuine warmth of the people was a major highlight and the healthy yet incredibly tasty food (especially Beef Lok Lak in Cambodia and Khao Piak Sen in Laos) an added bonus.

Laos vs Cambodia: What’s The Difference?

In my opinion, they are fairly similar in terms of the people and food. They were both ancient kingdoms and enjoy a very deep and colourful history, as well as some beautiful landscapes like Battambang in Cambodia and several dramatic waterfalls in Laos.

One difference is that Laos is completely land locked and Cambodia enjoys a coastline, so if you like to relax at a beach resort towards the end of your holiday, I’d recommend heading down to Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem. These are two quiet, sandy islands south of Cambodia with beautiful accommodation options.

Which destination surprised you more, and why?

Personally, I liked Luang Prabang a lot! This simple and small town was so lush and green with the Nam Khan and Mekong flowing through it to give a dramatic setting. Everything is easily accessible and the evening food market is the perfect place to sample authentic local dishes. Siem Reap was another memorable experience as it was much bigger than I had thought with a confluence of cultures reflecting a fascinating blend of Khmer, Buddhist and Hindu influences.

What was the most memorable experience on the trip?

Aside from the magnificent sunrise at the Angkor Wat complex, spending an afternoon at the Kuang Si Falls. The sheer magnitude of these falls humbles you. The sound of the water was so soothing and the various falls making a fantastic background for some dramatic photos.

Which accommodation stood out?

For me, the Nam Khan eco luxury lodge in Luang Prabang, a riverside hideout with beautiful villas to spend a relaxing time and the Chinta Mani in Siem Reap, right in the town centre with exceptionally friendly staff and luxurious rooms to pamper you after sightseeing.

What was the hospitality like?

Overall I can safely say that each and every hotel, big or small, simple or luxurious has a very welcoming staff. The kindness and humility of the people in both countries left a lasting impression throughout my journey.

Should you combine Laos and Cambodia?

Absolutely! In fact I would recommend a long trip to travel the whole of Indochina (minimum 3 weeks) or if you wish to explore the highlights and dig deeper into each country then Laos and Cambodia can be combined. What would you say to a client who is deciding whether to include Laos and/or Cambodia in a wider Southeast Asia itinerary?

I would recommend Laos and Cambodia to anyone who is interested in ancient kingdom history/Indochina and more so for excellent (perhaps underrated) food and hospitality.

However, a lot will depend on how long you wish to be away for. Most countries of that region can be stand alone destinations however Laos and Cambodia can easily be combined and if you really want to make the most of your time when travelling all the way there, then you can include Vietnam and spend a whole month of warmth, fantastic food, some gorgeous hotels and genuine smiles.

Planning an Indochina Holiday

If you're planning a luxury holiday to Southeast Asia, don't overlook Laos and Cambodia. Together they offer a rewarding combination of fascinating history, spectacular scenery, outstanding hospitality and some of the region's most underrated food. They work brilliantly as a standalone two-country itinerary or as part of a longer journey through Vietnam and the wider Indochina region.

If your travel dates allow, consider timing your visit to coincide with one of the region's traditional festivals, when colourful celebrations and local customs add another memorable dimension to the experience, such as the Lai Heua Fai (Laos festival of light) in October or the Khmer New Year around 14th April (which also coincides with the Thai “Songkran” Water Festival). Whether you're visiting for two weeks or a full month, you'll leave with lasting memories and a much deeper appreciation of this remarkable corner of Asia.
