For those wanting to experience Japan's stunning natural beauty as well as spend some time away from the 'golden routes'. After a brief stop soaking up the excitement of Tokyo you travel out towards the Japanese Alps, via the castle city of Matsumoto.

Mountain lovers will bask in the glorious scenery around Kamikochi and Takayama, before taking in the culture of Kyoto. From there you travel off the beaten track to the beautiful Kii Peninsula, and walk an ancient pilgrimage route.

Note: This trip can only be taken from April to November due to snow in and around Kamikochi.

Travel by train throuigh the mountains to Matsumoto , gateway to the Japanese Alps.

Kamikochi

Travel by train and bus deep into the mountains to Kamikochi .

Kamikochi

Spend the day at leisure in this glorious alpine environment.

Day 7
Takayama

Board a bus and travel over mountain passes to Takayama .

Day 8
Takayama

Stay in a traditional inn and wander the beautifully preserved streets.

Day 9
Kyoto

Travel by Bullet Train to Kyoto for a two night stay.

Day 10
Kyoto

Use buses and the subway to explore Kyoto, accompanied by a local guide.

Day 11
Shirahama

Take a train to Shirahama , located on the beautiful west coast of the Kii Peninsula.

Day 12
Yunomine Onsen

With a guide, walk along the Kumano Kodo, an ancient pilgrimage culminating at the revered Hongu shrine. Stay in a traditional inn.

Day 13
Nachi Taisha

Take a traditional raft down the stunning Kumano River. Explore the Hayatama Shrine and the Nachi Shrine. Stay in simple temple lodging.

Day 14
Osaka

Enjoy a tour of the area. Afterwards take the express train to Osaka.

Day 15
Osaka, UK

Fly back to the UK.
