Even today Japan symbolises the exotic, the unknown and the unfathomable, and exudes a sense of complete ‘otherness’ that draws visitors to its fascinating, volcanic shores. A wealth of World Heritage shrines, temples and gardens as well as modern Japan with its ultra efficient transport system and tall skyscrapers await discovery on this introductory tour.

Start in the capital city Tokyo and explore the main sights of the city with your private guide. Spend a day in scenic Nikko, known for its ornate Toshogu Shrine. Take a rejuvenating soak in a hot spring at Hakone and then travel on to Kyoto, a fascinating city that echoes tales of a rich royal past.

Suggested itinerary

Day 1
Tokyo

Arrive in Tokyo and transfer by airport bus to the Ginza Gracery hotel or similar, for a three night stay.

Day 2
Tokyo

Explore the capital with a private guide using Tokyo’s excellent public transportation. Visit Meiji Jingu shrine, the historic Asakusa district and take a cruise down the Sumida river to Hamarikyu gardens.

Day 3
Tokyo, Nikko

Take a trip north, by shared coach, to visit Nikko today. Set in beautiful surroundings, this World Heritage site has been a Centre of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for many centuries.

Day 4
Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Hakone

Travel to the beautiful Hakone National Park via Mount Fuji by shared coach. Stop on the slopes, at a height of over 2000m and admire the panoramic views (weather permitting). Later enjoy a cruise on Lake Ashi, and a lovely cable-car ride. Stay overnight at the Hakone hotel or similar. You can enjoy a soak in the hotel’s open-air hot spring bath.

Day 5
Kyoto

Take the bullet train to Kyoto and stay for two nights at the New Miyako hotel or similar. Take part in a Tea Ceremony at Wak Japan this evening.

Day 6
Kyoto

A treasure trove of Japanese history and tradition, Kyoto used to be the national capital for more than one thousand years. Explore the city with a private guide, using public transportation. Visit the Imperial Palace, Kyoto Handicraft centre, Nijo Castle, Kinkakuji and the Kiyomizu temple on your full day tour.

Day 7
Kyoto

Transfer to Osaka’s Kansai airport to board your onward flight.
