Tucked away in an eastern suburb of Matsuyama near Dogo Park, this is a great option if you want to experience a scrupulously authentic ryokan. Although English is spoken, the majority of its clientele are discerning Japanese travellers who value highly the traditions of old-world hospitality: beautiful cedar-wood and bamboo interiors, fabulous kaiseki meals and courteous service. This is a small, family-run property with only 8 guest rooms and two communal onsen hot tubs opening on to a beautifully tended courtyard garden. Staying here feels a bit like stepping back in time to a more genteel era, though the furnishings, bedding and décor are all state-of-the-art.
