Hemis National Park is the largest national park in South Asia, covering over 4,400 square kilometres. It is a sanctuary of breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife in eastern Ladakh. Situated at an altitude ranging from 3,300 to 6,000 meters, it covers over 4,400 square kilometres. The varied topography of rugged mountains, deep gorges, alpine meadows, and riverine valleys creates a stunning backdrop for its rich biodiversity.

Flora in the Park thrives in its various ecological niches, from alpine pastures to cold deserts. It hosts a range of vegetation, including juniper, birch, and poplar trees, alongside numerous medicinal plants and herbs adapted to the harsh mountainous climate. The park is renowned for its diverse fauna, most notably the elusive snow leopard, the Tibetan wolf, the Eurasian brown bear, the red fox, the Tibetan argali and the Asiatic ibex. It is a veritable paradise for birdwatchers, and it includes golden eagles, lammergeiers or bearded vultures, and several species of finches and snowcocks.

Each season brings unique experiences for visitors, with the most sought-after activity, Snow Leopard Spotting, being reserved for the winter months from December to March, when the majestic cats come into the lower reaches. Summer is a great time for trekking, birdwatching, and camping amidst the serene landscapes. Accommodation options include homestays in villages like Rumbak and Zingchen, offering an authentic Ladakhi experience. For those preferring more comfort, guesthouses and luxury camps are available in Leh, the nearest town, which also serves as the gateway to the park.

Hemis National Park not only captivates with its natural beauty but also plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, particularly for endangered species like the snow leopard. Its significance extends beyond borders, drawing wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists worldwide to experience its unique biodiversity and contribute to its protection.

Naturally, no visit is complete without exploring Leh's fascinating monasteries and palaces, where the summer months are a great time to explore the many monastery festivals that take place in its surrounding hamlets or spend time with the Pashmina farmers of the region.
