Leh, Indian Himalayas, India

Situated down the valley from Leh in a pretty village close to the Indus River, Nimmu House is a century-old mansion that formerly belonged to a cousin of the local King. Renovation work has restored it to its former glory using traditional materials and techniques. With their stripped-poplar floors, exposed beams, chalk-white walks and luminous Himalayan textiles, the five rooms in the main house are soothing and stylish boltholes – like double-spreads out of Elle Décor, but in keeping with the local Ladakhi aesthetic. The same is true of the seven luxury tents in the garden, which offer comparable levels of comfort, only under canvas. In short: an idyllic retreat combing the best of east and west’ equally well suited to families and groups as self-contained couples.
