Suggested itinerary

Day 1
Ulaanbaatar

Arrive Ulaanbaatar, settle in and enjoy an introductory city visit and welcome dinner.

Arriving in Mongolia’s quietly compelling capital, you are welcomed and transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city. Depending on arrival time, begin to absorb the spirit of Ulaanbaatar — perhaps stepping into incense-scented monasteries, wandering across grand Sukhbaatar Square, or exploring museums that trace the sweep of Mongolia’s vast history. In the evening, traditional music and dance bring the steppe to life before a warm welcome dinner.

Travel Details: 1 hr 15 mins / 54 km Airport → city centre; short local outings around town.

Accommodation: Tuushin Hotel.

Meals Included: Dinner.

Day 2
Ikh Gazriin Chuluu

Drive south to stay with a nomadic family and explore the granite rock formations.

Leaving the city behind, the landscape opens into rolling steppe as you journey south to meet your nomadic hosts. Settle into your private ger and share a home-cooked meal before venturing into the dramatic granite formations of Ikh Gazriin Chuluu — a world of hidden caves, wind-sculpted rocks and sacred springs. As evening falls, life slows to the rhythms of the steppe, perhaps watching milking or horse tending before gathering for a simple, heartfelt dinner.

Travel Details: 4–5 hrs / ~300 km; 30–40 mins e/w to Ikh Gazriin Chuluu.

Accommodation: Simple Private Ger, Nomadic Family.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 3
Mandalgobi | Gobi Oasis Project

Visit Mandalgobi and plant trees at the Gobi Oasis conservation nursery.

The journey continues to Mandalgobi, where a small but determined conservation effort is slowly transforming the desert’s edge. At the Gobi Oasis nursery, plant seedlings that will take root long after your visit — a meaningful connection to Mongolia’s future. Later, learn the comforting rituals of Mongolian home cooking, preparing traditional dishes side by side before sharing the meal together.

Travel Details: ~2 hrs / 70 km drive.

Accommodation: Simple Private Ger, Gobi Oasis.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 4
Tsagaan Suvarga | Del Uul Petroglyphs

Head to Omnogobi province to explore the white-cliff formations and rock paintings.

Drive deeper into the South Gobi where the land begins to shimmer with mineral colour. The towering white cliffs of Tsagaan Suvarga rise dramatically from the desert floor, sculpted by millennia of wind and rain. Explore caves and ancient petroglyphs at Del Uul, where Bronze Age markings whisper stories of early nomadic life beneath vast, open skies.

Travel Details: ~3 hrs / 170 km; 25 km e/w to Del Uul.

Accommodation: Standard Ger, Tsagaan Suvarga.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 5
Dalanzadgad | Yolyn Am

Visit Dalanzadgad and hike into the ice-filled Yolyn Am gorge.

After a visit to the South Gobi Museum, venture into the dramatic gorge of Yolyn Am — a narrow canyon carved between sheer rock walls where ice can linger well into summer. Walk at your own pace, scanning the cliffs for wildlife and feeling the cool air rising from the ravine, before returning to camp as the desert plains glow in the late afternoon light.

Travel Details: ~3 hrs / 170 km; ~1 hr / 40 km to Yolyn Am; walking 1–2 hrs.

Accommodation: Deluxe En-Suite Ger, Gobi Mirage.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 6
Khongoryn Els (Singing Dunes)

Scenic drive to Khongoryn Els for dune climbing, a camel ride and nomadic visits.

A sweeping desert drive brings you to the immense dunes of Khongoryn Els, known as the “Singing Dunes” for the low hum they sometimes emit in the wind. Climb to the crest for a breathtaking panorama of sand meeting steppe, then visit a camel-herding family to learn about life in this elemental landscape. An optional Bactrian camel ride offers a timeless way to cross the sands.

Travel Details: ~4 hrs / 180 km drive.

Accommodation: En-suite Wooden Lodge, Gobi Erdene.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 7
Khavtsgait | Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs)

Explore ancient petroglyphs and the palaeontological Flaming Cliffs.

At Khavtsgait, intricate petroglyphs etched into stone reveal the artistic legacy of early steppe dwellers. Later, arrive at the legendary Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, where red sandstone blazes under the sun and some of the world’s most significant dinosaur fossils were discovered. Walk through this otherworldly landscape as colours intensify toward sunset.

Travel Details: ~4 hrs / 190 km including stops.

Accommodation: Deluxe Ensuite Ger, Gobi Tour.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 8
Ongiin Khiid

Drive north to the reconstructed Ongiin Khiid temple complex.

Turning northward, the scenery begins to soften as you approach the quiet ruins and reconstructed temples of Ongiin Khiid. Once a thriving monastic centre, its story is one of loss and revival. Walk among the temples and stupas, meeting resident monks and reflecting on Mongolia’s spiritual resilience.

Travel Details: Up to ~5 hrs / 160 km.

Accommodation: Standard Ger, Ongiin Nuuts.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 9
Orkhon Valley

Enter greener countryside and explore the Orkhon Valley.

The steppe grows greener as you journey into the Orkhon Valley, a landscape of rivers, grazing livestock and wide horizons. Upon arrival, take a walk or gentle horse ride to Uurtiin Tokhoi Canyon, or — if conditions allow — paddle quietly along the river, absorbing the serenity of this UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.

Travel Details: ~6 hrs / 250 km.

Accommodation: Superior Ger, Talbiun.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 10
Orkhon Waterfall | Nomadic Homestay

Stay with a local family near the Orkhon waterfall.

Travel to your host family near the dramatic Orkhon Waterfall, where water plunges into a basalt canyon. Walk or ride across open pasture to reach the falls, then immerse yourself in nomadic life — helping erect a ger and learning traditional skills. Dinner may include khorkhog, a celebratory dish cooked with hot stones, shared in true steppe style.

Travel Details: c.3 hrs / 90 km (rough roads).

Accommodation: Simple Private Ger, Galaa’s Family.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 11
Orkhon Valley Homestay

A full day living alongside your nomadic hosts.

A day without schedule, shaped instead by the rhythm of the land. Help milk yaks, learn to make dairy products, try your hand at archery, ride across open pasture or simply sit with tea and watch clouds drift across endless sky. It is an opportunity to connect deeply with Mongolia’s enduring nomadic spirit.

Travel Details: No driving.

Accommodation: Simple Private Ger, Galaa’s Family.

Meals Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner.

Day 12
Tovkhon Khiid | Kharkhorin

Hike to hilltop Tovkhon Monastery and continue to historic Kharkhorin.

A forested hike leads to the secluded Tovkhon Monastery, perched high above the valley with sweeping views of the surrounding hills. After time to explore and reflect, continue to Kharkhorin, once the capital of the Mongol Empire, where echoes of imperial history linger across the plains.

Visit Mongolia’s oldest monastery and explore Khogno Khaan nature reserve.

Begin at Erdene Zuu, Mongolia’s oldest surviving monastery, where chanting monks and white stupas create an atmosphere of deep reverence. Continue to the diverse landscapes of Khogno Khaan — mountains, steppe and sand dunes meeting in one place — and walk to the atmospheric ruins of Uvguun Khiid, tucked into the rocky hillside.
