At the far west end of Yangon’s colonial district, Bogyoke Aung San Market (formerly ‘Scott Market’) is Myanmar’s single richest source of souvenirs. Crammed on to two sprawling storeys in a sugar-pink building dating from 1926 are over 2,000 stalls, divided into different sections for antiques, art, handicrafts, jewellery, clothing, coins and stamps. Of particular note are the shops specializing in beautiful, hand-woven hill-tribe textiles from the Shan Plateau and Chin regions of the northwest, fine lacquerware from Bagan and traditional paper parasols from the Ayeyarwady Delta. Also on offer is a wide selection of Burmese gemstones, including high quality Pigeon’s Blood rubies and polished jade – though only confirmed experts are advised to part with serious money!
