A visit to the APOPO Visitor Center (AKA "Rat Museum") offers a unique and meaningful insight into Cambodia’s past and present through the lens of furry friends. Through a guided tour, visitors learn about the country’s history of landmines and the ongoing efforts to make affected areas safe again, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by local communities.
The highlight of the experience is meeting APOPO’s famous "HeroRATs". These highly trained African giant pouched rats use their incredible sense of smell to detect explosives, which has been proven to be far more effective and safer than traditional methods like metal detectors within the affective areas of Cambodia. Guests can watch live demonstrations of these life-saving animals in action, and even get the chance to interact with them, making this both an educational and unforgettable addition to any Siem Reap itinerary.
