No one needs to be reminded that temperatures in Saudi Arabia can get very hot in the summer months but what is less well known is that the country experiences four clear seasons of:
Spring (Mid-March to Mid-June) when rain brings cooler weather and lush greenery to the country. Evening and overnight temperatures can drop to 15 degrees in the plains and even lower in the hills.
Summer months (mid-June to mid-September) brings in the peak temperatures we all know about that can rise to 43 degrees or higher, making it prohibitive for most travellers.
The Autumn (mid-September to Mid-December) is similar to spring when daytime temperatures are between 25 -30 degrees C and cooler evenings.
Winter days in Saudi Arabia brings balmy days with cool nights, ideal for camping, rock climbing or exploring Saudi Arabia’s verdant highlands. Average winter temperatures are in the teens, but the lucky few who venture into the mountains or deeper desert may experience desert sands.
Any visit to the country requires careful packing to ensure you are equipped with cool cottons for daywear plus a light sweater, scarves or pashminas to cope with the lower evening temperatures and liberal air-conditioning in buildings.
A good pair of sturdy walking shoes, sunglasses, sun lotion, chapstick and a water bottle are advised. If travelling in the spring, you will find a rain jacket very useful and a heavy jacket/coat if heading out in winter.
As a final note, it's worth adding that unlike some middle-eastern countries there is no specific dress code for women travellers although we recommend a more conservative approach in respect of local traditions.
