This walled, mud-brick citadel outside Kerman is similar to the ancient citadel of Bam, which was destroyed by an earthquake in December 2003 (and is currently being rebuilt by the Iranian government). Well preserved, and in a truly spectacular setting, with the rippled slopes of Haraz mountain looming to the south, the site offers a flavour of what life must have been like in this region during medieval times. Photographers will be in their element, particularly during the spring when traces of snow streak the nearby ridges. Inside the building, stalls set up by local craftspeople include one devoted to traditional knives.
