Sri Lanka is chock-full of achingly romantic places to stay, from simple thatched chalets on secluded beaches, to luxurious floating villas in the forest. Making the experience really special, however, is not just down to the choice of property and location, but also which room, suite or villa offers the greatest privacy and best views.

Sri Lanka is a popular destination for honeymooners with many combining a holiday here with some time in the Maldives. To help narrow down the options, here we've compiled our top five favourite hotels for honeymooners.

Jetwing Vil Uyana, Sigiriya

Why We Like It:

Nestled amid ponds and paddy fields, the stilted dwellings of this luxury hideaway in the Cultural Triangle are well spaced and offer an exceptional degree of privacy.  The spa is in a wonderful setting: enjoy a sandalwood and turmeric body wrap at their treatment centre next to the water.

Best Room for Honeymooners:

The ‘Marsh Dwelling’ is a complete sanctuary. After touring the ancient sites nearby you can relax in your own private plunge pool, with the sounds of nature on all sides.

Kalundewa Retreat, Dambulla

Why We Like It:

Set on a 100-acre estate, Kalundewa Retreat is wonderfully secluded yet only a short distance from the famous cave temples of Dambulla. The two of you can bathe in the spring-fed ‘ulpatha’ pool or learn more about the Sri Lankan cuisine with a master class from the chef.

Best Room for Honeymooners:

Screened by foliage, vines and tree roots, Kalundewa’s ‘Nil Manel Floating Villa’ is berthed on the hotel’s own private lagoon. It has a Jacuzzi on a private deck, where you can dine by lamp light in the evenings. The views across the water, dappled by sunlight streaming through the willow and jackfruit trees, are heavenly.

Chena Huts, Yala

Why We Like It:

An intimate, luxurious coastal property bordering Yala National Park, Chena Huts is one of our favourite safari resorts on the island. Each of the 14 cabins have their own private plunge pool where you can relax between wildlife safaris in the park.

Best Room for Honeymooners:

A chalet on the beach or in the forest – it’s your choice. Either way, a vivid, romantic experience of the coastal landscape is guaranteed: if you’re lucky, you’ll see elephants playing on the sands, and flocks of pink flamingos feeding on the lagoon.

Uga Bay, Passikudah

Why We Like It:

Uga Bay’s location – on one of Sri Lanka’s best beaches – is hard to top. But what makes this a sure-fire winner for honeymooners are the special experiences they lay on for couples: digging a table and chairs into the sand for a seafood extravaganza, and exclusive dolphin- and whale-spotting trips, to name but two.

Best Room for Honeymooners:

The ‘Beach Studios’ have uninterrupted sea views from their own private terraces, and direct access to the sand. However, for complete privacy we recommend one of the double-storied ‘Beach Villas’, which come with plunge pool and al fresco bar.

Reef Villa, Wadduwa

Why We Like It:

At the right time of year, you can enjoy the glorious golden-sand beach, Reef Villa is a real gem of a boutique hotel. Its decadent, antique-filled interiors create an unashamedly romantic feel, while the gardens are alive with the heady scent of hibiscus and frangipani flowers.

Best Room for Honeymooners:

The Ocean Suites have deep, shaded verandahs – large enough for private dining –and they come complete with beautiful Indian swings.
