Day 3
HANOI

Experience Hanoi in its fullest with a day tour of the city. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, unveil the city's rich history, vibrant culture, and delectable cuisine as you explore iconic landmarks and hidden gems.

Vietnam’s charismatic capital, on the Red River, may be expanding and modernizing at an extraordinary pace, but it’s a great city to explore. Surrounded by parks and tranquil lakes, the core is a medieval Old Quarter – one of the most atmospheric square kilometres in all of Asia – where traditional craftsmen ply their trade in narrow alleyways lined with antique shop-houses. For the most memorable experience, we say shed the car and enjoy the city on foot, by bicycle or motorbike and get a local’s view of the everchanging street life as you pass through at close quarters.

Uptown, colonial mansions and relaxing cafés flank the boulevards and leafy shores of Hoan Kiem Lake. Still, the prime attraction in the broader city is Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, where the Great Leader’s remains are embalmed in a sombre marble tomb. Other iconic landmarks include the 11th-century One Pillar Pagoda, and the Temple of Literature; a feast of medieval Vietnamese architecture erected in 1070 AD.

Day 12
Mekong Delta

The SJourney rail journey comes to an end in Ho Chi Minh City. After disembarking, you will be met and driven to Can Tho, where you will spend 1 night on the stunning Mekong Delta River.

Known as ‘Vietnam’s Rice Bowl’, The Mekong Delta is one of the most intensively farmed, densely inhabited regions in Asia. Mile upon mile of lush paddy fields carpet the flat landscape, lined by fruit orchards and coconut groves. Encompassing a chequerboard of cultures, this is also one of the most ethnically diverse parts of the country – a fact reflected in the rich architectural heritage of the larger towns, many of whose inhabitants live crammed into houseboats on the river, or in stilt houses perched above it.

Although the Mekong Delta is primarily a rural region, it holds plenty of large, bustling towns too, and Can Tho is the liveliest of them. It’s also the most rewarding to explore, thanks to the wealth of Vietnamese pagodas, Chinese and Khmer temples, mosques and churches lining its streets.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the wonderful floating markets along the bay, where local people buy and sell a prodigious array of fresh produce, piled on to an equally amazing selection of craft, ranging from tiny rowed sampans to lumbering houseboats.

Day 14
Ho Chi Minh City

Experience Ho Chi Minh City in its fullest with a full day tour, led by a passionate local expert, to experience the city's unique charm through the eyes of an insider.

Ho Chi Minh City or HCMC, previously known as Saigon is Vietnam’s busiest and most popular city epitomizes the contrasting facets of modern Vietnam. Vibrant, dynamic and evolving at a breathless pace, it also retains strong connections with its past.

The historical importance of HCMC cannot be understated. Visit the hauntingly fascinating War Remnants Museum for a detailed journey into the Vietnam War between 1955-1975, which is host to personal accounts of the war and powerful imagery. The nearby Reunification Palace is also of historical significance. This stunning palace was the symbolic sight of the fall of Saigon and the end of the war. Visitors can marvel at the kitsch furniture and decadent décor installed by the leaders of South Vietnam, who ran the war from a command centre in the basement.

Modern day HCMC is quite the cultural hub, home to 8.9 million people. A few highlights include the sensory-overloading Bui Ven Walking Street, the vibrant atmosphere of Chinatown and the bustling Ben Thanh Market.

Day 15
Ho Chi Minh City

During your excursion you will see first-hand the intricacies of the tunnels, as well as the innovative traps which the Viet Cong set for the enemy. You will also have the opportunity to crawl through the tunnels yourself and pose for a picture - although there is no obligation to do so, particularly if you are claustrophobic!
