For a few months each year, during the summer, when we are blessed with warm, balmy days and cool evenings, the beautiful valleys of Himachal Pradesh in the western Himalayas reveal their hidden treasures as the glistening snows melt to fill deep blue mountain lakes and rivers fill to full swell, creating captivating landscapes. From midsummer to the end of September, the valleys attract visitors, trekkers and pilgrims alike.

Home to remote hamlets and sacred monasteries perched at dizzying heights, a journey to these parts is as much a spiritual experience as relaxing lush green meadows, apple orchards, and a striking backdrop of snow-covered mountains. It is a treasure trove of stunning valleys, each offering unique experiences and attractions that make it a must-visit destination. Here are some of the most significant valleys listed in order of altitude, but numerous others.

Trekkers and walkers of every ability can find a trail to suit, from accessible walking routes to the more challenging High-altitude treks. One of the more leisurely walks would be the lower reaches.

Kangra Valley: Altitude - ~2000 meters.

Renowned for its beautiful lush green fields, expansive tea gardens and apple orchards. Easily reached by road from Delhi or Chandigarh, the valley is famously known for Dharamsala, the home to the Dalai Lama, the Kangra School of miniature paintings, for which there is a beautiful museum. Other places worth visiting are the ancient Kangra Fort, Masroor Rock Cut Temples, and the famous Baijnath Temples. Its bustling town of Manali is the focal point for adventurers embarking on driving, walking, hiking, rafting, and paragliding adventures.

Sangla Valley - Altitude: ~2,700 meters

The Sangla Valley, in the Kinnaur's lower regions, is regarded as the most beautiful in the Indian Himalayas and reputedly gloriously unspoilt. The road to Sangla crosses steep slopes carpeted with pine and cedar forest before cutting across steep mountain slopes covered in pine and cedar to discover the Schist stone homesteads of the Kinnauri communities centred around almond, apricot and apple groves. Make sure you visit the charming towns of Sangla, Chitkul, Rakcham, and the historic Kamru Fort.

Trekkers and walkers of every ability can find a trail here, from easy to more challenging. One of the easier walks is around, and a notable, more challenging one is a five-day circuit of the sacred Kinner-Kailash massif, attracting both visitors and pilgrims from midsummer through to the end of September.

Kinnaur Valley - Altitude: ~2,300 to 3,500 meters

A large and beautiful valley, including the picturesque Sangla Valley, is known for its apples, vineyards, and proximity to the Kinnaur Kailash range. Its uniquely blended Hindu and Buddhist cultures, along with its scenic beauty, make it a fascinating destination. The delightful towns of Kalpa, Reckong Peo, and Marvel offer breath taking views of the Kinner Kailash range.

Lahaul Valley - Altitude: ~3,000 to 4,000 meters

At a higher altitude, Lahaul is characterized by its glacial landscapes and high mountain passes like Rohtang Pass and Baralacha La. The valley's rugged beauty and challenging terrain appeal to adventurers and nature enthusiasts hoping for more challenging hikes and treks. The region is beautiful for those wishing to explore High Buddhist culture.

Spiti Valley - Altitude: ~3,300 to 4,500 meters

Spiti is a high-altitude desert known for its breath taking stark and rugged terrain, ancient monasteries such as Kyi Monastery, and the Spiti River. The deep turquoise waters of the Spiti River snake through the terraces of vivid green barley, with tiny villages clinging to the mountain slopes.
