Winter can often feel as if it has outstayed its welcome, but thankfully, there are compensations; spring is just around the corner! Asia reveres this delicate season of renewal and views it as a source of joy and time to celebrate. Here, we highlight some of the most compelling Asian destinations in spring.

Japan

Think of Spring in Japan; the mind leaps forward to soft pink blossoms covering the countryside. For a few weeks, cherry trees erupt into pink hues, and right across the Land of the Rising Sun, these delicate blossoms – ‘Sakura’ – symbolise the fragile nature of life itself, a central trope of Japanese philosophy and culture.

The parks of Tokyo and Kyoto and the countryside beyond are incredibly vibrant at this time of the year when families gather under blooming trees to picnic together and celebrate Hanami, the transience and beauty of the flowers and life.  Our Romantic Japan Tour offers an enchanting avenue to experience this beautiful phenomenon.

It has to be said that Japan is also glorious in the Autumn season when the country transforms into a myriad of autumnal golden shades of yellow, orange, and brown as nature takes another turn! To find out more, talk to our specialists.

South Korea

Despite its fast-paced, technologically advanced image, Japan's neighbouring South Korea also takes its cherry blossom season seriously. Locally known as "Beotkkot," the season arrives a little later than in Japan, around the end of March, and is celebrated right across the country with spring festivals, cultural programmes, and family picnics under blossom-laden trees. It's a great time to visit the country, but leave a little extra time to enjoy the blossoms and festivities, particularly in Seoul, when the city and beautiful Bukhansan National Park at its doorstep are a blaze of colour.

China

In a country as large and diverse as China, there is always a delectable corner that is just right for each season, but in Springtime, almost the entire country sees pleasant temperatures and dry weather. It's a great time to visit Shanghai, the nearby ancient capitals, and quaint water towns aglow with peach blossoms in the country's southeast. At the opposite end, the desert regions of Xinjin, renowned as the access point of the Silk Road, are carpeted with pear blossoms. At the same time, the more central areas of Chengdu, Xian, home to Panda Bears and the Terracotta Warriors, see bursts of peonies, while the ethnic minority groups around Guilin's dramatic landscapes in the south enjoy rhododendrons, peach blossoms and magnolias. At the same time, The antiquities of the Forbidden City of Beijing and the Great Wall of China in the northeast are incredibly vibrant, covered in hawthorns, forsythias, and cherry blossoms.

With the country only re-emerged for tourism after a hiatus of five years, our Managing Director, Amrit Singh, took a long and glorious trip across the country last month to check out its readiness for you. Her verdict: China remains completely captivating. The sheer variety of experiences it offers is near overwhelming but enthralling, and it is a 'must-do' destination. The country has diligently prepared itself for reopening with a refreshed tourism infrastructure, new domestic flight routes, roads and high-speed railways, all offering improved connectivity and new, world-class standard hotels for more luxurious stays. However, the most impressive part that left her wanting to return was the warmth of the people and the tremendous hospitality and welcome extended throughout the country. She is looking for a window to return! How about you?

Uzbekistan

British travellers have long been enamoured by fables of the Ancient Silk Road. From Robert Byron’s "The Road to Oxiana" to Peter Frankopan’s ongoing book series "The Silk Road", this historic strip remains a constant. If any place epitomises the splendour of the Silk Road, it is the domed mosques, tombs and madrasas of Uzbekistan, an ancient cultural crucible, which holds three of the world’s oldest cities – Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva – whose walled centres are ‘open-air museums’, with sights spanning five millennia.

Our Great Cities of The Silk Road tour offers the opportunity to visit these impressive sights, over a focused 12 days of travel along the former Silk Road. Spring is the ideal time to visit, and this is the ideal time to plan a booking. Why not book it this year?

Bhutan

A holiday to the magical Kingdom of Bhutan, means an escape from everyday life into a land of myths and legends where daily life revolves around peace, harmony and unity. Set deep in the Himalayas, Bhutan's pristine valleys, stunning snow-peaked mountains, and sublime rivers are every bit as inviting as its unique and inspired way of life. The pursuit of happiness and stoic observation of traditions and culture have stood the test of time here and survived unchanged.

Spring and Autumn are the two most desirable seasons, with spring pipping the post with its festivals. We can ensure you time your visit to coincide with the many vibrant festivities happening in Bhutan. Our favourite is Paro Tsechu, a deeply significant religious festival held annually in Paro, Bhutan. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the second month in the Bhutanese lunar calendar, which typically falls in March or April in the Gregorian calendar.
