Run by gold-standard Indian chain Taj Group, the Vivanta Fisherman’s Cove sits on a sandy spur jutting into the mouth of the Muttukadu backwater, half an hour’s drive south of the Tamil capital. The location, midway between the city and Mamallapuram, is quiet and breezy, with a wonderful beach literally on the doorstep. A tropical garden set amid the ramparts of an old Dutch fort enfolds the sea-facing chalets, which are modern and air-conditioned inside. The feature that most guests love here, however, is the fabulous outdoor pool.
