Ladakh, Indian Himalayas, India
Nubra’s first purpose-built boutique hotel, this recently built property in the village of Hundar has raised the bar in this remote valley half a day’s drive over the mountains to the north of Leh. The architecture was inspired by the work of Laurie Baker, and features extensive use of local stone, mud brick and wood. It’s a modern design but doesn’t feel incongruous. The interiors are light and soothing. Off-white walls, discrete lighting and hand-printed textiles create a soothing feels, while the huge French windows lead on to private balconies with swing seats. The views across the valley are simply out of the world. In short: our recommended option if you enjoy contemporary architecture and design in a traditional village setting.
