In the heart of rural India, three hours’ drive from Raipur and at the foot of Maikal Hills is Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat. Nestled amongst a garden of butterflies and birds, you will find five rooms that have shady verandas onto a central courtyard.
Your hosts are Sunny and his Swiss wife Sabrina who will join you on village walks and cycle tours of the surrounding area. Return to the lodge for Sabrina’s famous banana cake, reputedly to be the best in Central India.
Explore the local villages inhabited by yadavs (cattle herders) and learn more about the lives of the Baiga and Gond tribespeople. Trek in the forested hills in search of barking deer, jackal and langur monkeys. You may even be fortunate to see a tiger or leopard.
Just five minutes from the lodge is the Bhoramdeo temple complex dating back to the 7th Century. The evening puja ceremony is well worth a visit where you can experience the sound of bells and the occasional pyrotechnic.
