Sitting just off the coast of Sandakan, within the world-renowned ‘turtle corridor’, Lankayan Island is often referred to as the jewel in the crown of the Sulu Sea. Covered in lush tropical vegetation and ensconced by white sandy beaches, the island, only accessible by boat, is famed for its dive sites and turtle habitation.
Untouched coral and off-shore wrecks create an incredibly diverse eco-system which hundreds of species of fish, manatees, rays, anemones, and a number of shark species call home. A professional dive centre, which rents out kayaking equipment can be used, whilst both hawksbill and green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs between June and September. The island’s only accommodation is the standard grade Lankayan Island Resort which houses 23 beach-front chalets.
