Perched on a hilltop with stunning views of the surrounding valley above the Drangme Chhu river, the beautiful town of Trashigang is situated in eastern Bhutan. It was once a bustling trade centre and, today, continues to serve as a popular market place for the semi-nomadic people of Merak and Sakteng. Overlooking the town is one of Trashigang's principle sites - the Trashigang Dzong or ‘The Fortress of the Auspicious Hill’. Built in the mid-17th century, the dzong has recently been under reconstruction.
The town serves as a useful stopover for those travelling between Eastern Bhutan and India. It's also a handy base for those contemplating the Merak Sakten Trek, which passes through the Sakten Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to endangered snow leopard and red panda, Himalayan bear and Himalayan red fox. It's also said to be home to the legendary yeti.
