Shirakami-Sanchi can be found in northern Japan with the mountain range being split between the Aomori and Akita prefectures. It is a hiker's paradise, as the numerous trails take visitors through the last remaining virgin beech forests in Japan. Along the way, they will encounter waterfalls, lakes, valleys and incredible mountain peaks.

Three of the most popular treks take walkers to a set of three waterfalls known as Anmon Falls; the Juniko series of lakes; and Nihon Canyon, where all manner of colours can be seen in the rock. There is a multitude of other options for those keen to get off the beaten track.

UNESCO added Shirakami-Sanchi to its World Heritage Sites list in 1993 in order to help protect its natural beauty. Anyone wishing to enter into the core zone will need a permit to do so. A number of visitors' centres provide in-depth information about the forests and their importance.
