Seaplanes – basically amphibious light aircraft with big, fat skis on the bottom that allow them to land on water – are the way to scoot between remote islands in the Maldives. If you’re lucky, you’ll be transferred to your resort in one. If not, consider booking an excursion – either a short photo-flight for a stunning bird’s-eye-view of the coral reef encircling your hotel, or a longer trip to a deserted islet or sandbar for a secluded wild swim. Either way, the sight of tiny, palm-fringed islands strewn across the pale-turquoise and deep-blue vastness of the Indian Ocean is one to savour.
