Dotted with art museums, outdoor sculpture parks and innovative architecture, Naoshima has become known as one of the foremost aesthetic experiences in Asia. The main accommodation on the island, Benesse House, is designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando and is an incredible modern art experience in itself. Art works by James Turrell, Lee Ufan and Yayoi Kusama can all be experienced at the nearby art sites. Elsewhere on the island, the Ando Museum and Art House project house more contemporary pieces, while the playfully named ‘I Love Yu’ (which means water in Japanese) is perhaps the only bathhouse in the world to double as an art installation space.
