Used by most people as the entry and exit point for a holiday to Sabah, Kota Kinabalu has a lot to offer. Its position on the coast is perfect, just a 20 minute boat ride from the five tropical islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, with easy access to surrounding tribal villages, rivers offering excellent white water rafting and the world renowned Kinabalu National park.

Pristine beaches spread north and south of the cosmopolitan city with excellent hotels such as the Shangri La Rasa Ria and Tanjung Aru on its doorstep. A mix of expats, Chinese, indigenous Kadazan and Malays make up the local residents meaning the plentiful offering of food is of a high standard. The Filipino market in particular is a must.

With more time, you can also venture off-shore by boat to the 5 beautiful islands comprising the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, whose coral gardens and white-sand beaches offer some fabulous snorkelling. Train enthusiasts will also enjoy a ride on the British-built North Borneo Railway, half an hour’s drive out of town, which retains a wonderful old, wood-burning Vulcan steam engine.
