The remarkable and impressive Kakatiya Rudreshwara Temple, known as simply the Ramappa Temple locally, was conferred UNESCO World Heritage status in July'21. Dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva, the temple was built in the 13th century by a military commander of the Kakatiya dynasty, on the site of an older, lost temple.
The beautifully preserved, star shaped and walled sandstone complex sits close to a fascinating reservoir and features highly decorated beams and pillars of carved granite and dolerite. Its sculptures are of high artistic value and celebrate the customs and culture of Kakatiyan Kingdom, particularly dance and are believed to have inspired a revival of the 'warrior dance' associated with Lord Shiva.
